It’s Victoria Day weekend so there’s no Hot Club Swing tonight. Enjoy the beautiful weather, and we’ll see you on June 2nd at the Beaumont Studios for out next dance!
Until then, enjoy this clip from one of the last times we were at the Beaumont:
Matt and Angie will be teaching an Intro to Bal-Swing class before the next Vancouver Dixieland Jazz Society Dance. It’s directed toward providing swing-dancers with some bal-swing moves they can incorporate into their lindy hop, so dancers need have no balboa experience to take the class. Non-swing dancers are also welcome.
Date: Saturday, Nov 26, 12:30-1:30pm
Cost: $10
Location: 490 Sperling Ave, Burnaby (Take the 135 express bus from downtown)
Following the class, the Jen Hodge All-Stars will be playing from 2-5pm for your dancing pleasure. Admittance to the dance is separate from the class, and costs $12 or $10 for students.
Thanks so much to the VDJS for helping us put on this event!
The one and only Chester Whitmore will be in town this weekend for the Vancouver Jazz Dance Festival and we’ve persuaded him to stay an extra day to teach a class at Jump Session.
Chester is truly a jazz dance legend, having learned from the many of the original masters of jazz and tap including Fayard Nicholas, John Bubbles, Leonard Reed and Archie Savage. Learning from him is a joy and a challenge – he’ll work your ass off, and you’ll love every moment of it.
We’re pleased to announce our very first Balboa Workshop of the season! It will be held on Sunday, October 23rd in the 3rd floor studio at 1555 W 7th Avenue.
1:00pm-2:15pm: Intro to Pure Bal with Matt & Angie
For those of you new to balboa, or wanting to brush up on your basics. No dance experience whatsoever is necessary for this class. 2:30pm-3:45pm: Beginner-Intermediate Balboa with Andrey & Lisa For people comfortable leading or following basic pure bal and bal swing moves.
Balboa. This California cousin of lindy hop is often a source of confusing and misunderstanding to swing dancers. Is it just “a dancer’s dance?” Is it only danced to really fast music? Is it boring? Or is it, perhaps, one of the most wonderful dances to both dance and watch, and a fantastic dance in and of itself as well as a marvelous tool for swing dancers of other sorts?
We’re pleased to announce that the 2011-2012 season of Jump Session will begin on Monday, September 12! For those who’ve yet to come out, Jump Session is a weekly practice session for lindy hop, balboa, and authentic jazz dancers. It runs every Monday (excluding holidays) for 8-10pm at EDAM Studio, 303 E 8th Ave.
For more information, check out the Jump Session page on this website!
